We Reduce or Reuse before we Recycle
"We believe in taking care of the Earth’s resources and our attention to environmental, social and economic responsibility includes putting practices in place that go beyond what is legally required of us. We choose every day in big and small ways how our actions and words build a better quality of life for our employees, customers and suppliers."
Our main aim is to reduce what we use.
The CO2 emissions in all Langstane company cars are below 131g/km. Each time a car is replaced we aim to replace it with one with even lower emissions. All of our company vehicles currently have ‘trackers’ installed in them. This comes with various benefits;
It is planned that in the future water consumption will be monitored and the aim is to reduce use. A meter will be installed as well as other equipment so we only have the water that we need. Systems will be put into the toilets to control flushing to save water.
Langstane print department uses ink that is made with vegetable oils and is 100% biodegradable.
The paper we print on is either recycled or harvested from sustainable forests.
We have phased out the use of alcohol in the litho process. The reduction in usage has been measured and recorded.
Any chemicals used in the plate making process are disposed of through certified environmental outlets. We are working towards a chemistry free plate processing system in the near future.
We recently introduced a waterless print process to the department. This protects one of our most precious resources for future generations.
We are always looking for ways of saving energy and have installed sensor activated lighting in the low occupancy areas at our Head Office in Aberdeen.
We are also working closely with Resource Efficient Scotland, who have recently completed an energy survey at our Head Office. We will be reviewing and are looking to implement some of the recommendations, which could save 60tCO2 annually.
Everything at Langstane has more than one life...
Pallets and other wooden products are given to a project called Wood RecyclAbility (www.woodrecyclability.co.uk). The charity works with adults that have learning disabilities. They transform the wood into products such as garden furniture, fencing and wildlife products as well as other things.
Customers are encouraged to give packaging back to us. This is then used back at our warehouse to pack other items. The same counts for boxes supplied by the supplier.
Boxes used for installations are given to Senator. Senator then uses the material to create fuel to heat their buildings. Visit www.senator.co.uk to find out more.
Our electricity comes from a renewable source supplied by Haven Power. To find out more on Haven Power visit www.havenpower.com.
And the last resort... recycling!
In 2015 81.5% of our waste was recycled. Waste is segregated into a variety of waste streams and we are continually looking to increase all that we recycle.
We recycle waste food from all of our sites. This is collected by a local company, who provide processing services and recycle organic materials into BSI accredited compost.
We also encourage our customers to recycle by offering the following services -
